Expert status, reader relationships and social bookmarking

social-bookmarking

Who wouldn’t want to be viewed as an expert in their field? It usually means more money, credibility and visibility.

You can get there with the help of your readers and social bookmarking.

When people find useful content they want to share it with others, and that’s what social bookmarking sites are all about. There are bookmarking sites for just about every kind of content, such as text, videos, pictures and more. The bookmarked content is then voted on by other members, and if popular, could even be featured on the front page.

There is one crucial thing to remember: Very few readers will bookmark your content if you don’t first build a relationship with them. Listen to what they have to say say in surveys and/or comments, and make changes to meet their needs. Knowing they are being listened to can have a dramatic impact. One thing that takes little effort yet is often overlooked is to reply when readers comment on your blog. Use your responses to start a conversation with them. It can be as much a fact-gathering mission as simple curiosity about your readers.

But, don’t stop there. Your readers may have their own websites as well. Make it a point to find what they are interested in. If they have blogs, take a few minuets to read and comment on them. Bookmark their posts that you find interesting, and if you see any of their bookmarked content, be sure to leave comments when you vote.

If you take the time to build relationships with your readers, chances are good that when they see your content bookmarked on a site like Digg or StumbleUpon, they will vote for you.
