Want your readers to trust you? Keep your promises

Everyone has bought at least one product that just didn’t live up to its claims. That’s what we get for watching late night infomercials and buying into the “get rich quick” hype. If you want your online business to still be around in a few years, you need to build relationships through integrity.

Integrity.

It’s a simple word that many business owners know nothing about. They would promote anything for a quick buck, and they don’t care what happens after they get the customer’s money. Their websites pop up and then disappear like a game of whack-a-mole, later resurfacing under another name once they’ve burned too many people. They know what people are looking for, but instead of actually providing it, they just exploit people for quick, easy money.

Integrity in business means keeping your promises. You may not realize it, but people scrutinize online businesses more than traditional brick and mortar businesses. If you don’t follow through, you won’t get the benefit of the doubt and you will lose both readers and sales.

One simple way to display your integrity is how you handle your customers’ personal information. Don’t add people to your email newsletter unless they voluntarily opt-in. If they do opt-in, don’t sell, rent or share their information, and by all means, don’t spam them. That is not the way to get what you want from your readers.

When it comes to affiliate marketing, only promote products or services that you know are legitimate and deliver what is promised, or better yet, products or services you use. The money you could make will be short lived if your reputation is shot.

Before visitors become customers, they will likely visit your site several times, reading your content, evaluating your expertise and learning about your beliefs. Be sure that everything you write is truthful and unique and informative. There is more than enough bad information floating around, and you can’t build a relationship of trust on false information.

You don’t have to make fantastic claims to get readers to keep reading, just make good on what you do offer them. It will build a relationship of trust that will benefit both you and your readers for years to come
