Who have you helped lately?

Posted by Jeremy L. Knauff | January 13th, 2009

In many situations, people are most concerned about what’s in it for them, but few of them actually make any effort to help anyone else. This is the road map to failure.

If you want success, real, sustainable success, you’ll need to give back. Actually, you’ll need to give first. It’s just how the world works. You can call it karma, spirituality, the law of attraction or anything else you like, but it is what it is. While we’re on the subject, you might get away with giving just so you can receive, but it’s pretty transparent and the effects will usually be short lived. To fully enjoy the benefits of giving, you need to be doing it for the right reasons and shouldn’t expect anything in return. If you happen to get something out of it, consider it an added bonus.

In 2009, you may want to rethink how you look at things. Perhaps you could set aside an hour of your valuable time each week to help others. You could volunteer at a non-profit organization, mentor a budding entrepreneur, become a role model to a child or clean up a local beach or trail or anything else that benefits others. Oh, and if you feel the need to brag about all the good things you’re doing, you’re doing them for the wrong reasons and you’ll look like a self-centered tool.
